The first fly of the new season was thrown by Eddie McCarthy who said that he
felt privileged to have been asked by his fellow workers.
All in all it was a strange season which was threatened with low water from
early on and was rescued somewhat with a little rainfall during May. Thereafter,
the drought extended through to the end of the fishing season.
This was our first season of complete “ catch & release” until mid June and with
anglers allowed to take two fish weighing under eight pounds thereafter. Given
the poor water conditions, it was impossible to gauge the success or otherwise
of this venture, and the same rules will apply for 2014.
Our first fish was caught at the end of February on beat seven. We picked away
during April but, with some rainfall in May, the numbers picked up
substantially. We witnessed a very good smolt migration from mid April to mid
May.
There were no reports of any kind of pollution and no report of any disease.
Again, because the huge numbers of fish present in the system, it was felt that
there would be no need to operate the Hatchery this Winter.
