Salmon Life Cycle - Alevin

Alevin measure 15mm when newly hatched. They remain in the gravel until their yolk sac is gone, then emerge by June as free-swimming fry.

These are the alevin which have hatched from the eggs previously shown.

The alevin have a small yolk sac which feeds them for several weeks. After this time they are released by us at various points in the river, usually in small burns where (1) the chances of survival are higher (2) we encourage fish to return to spawn and (3) the alevin can find "sheltered accomodation" easier.
